Unfolding Space: Labyrinth 1
Deborah Wang, Unfolding Space: Labyrinth 1, 2009, 8.5 x 30″ colour inkjet print
[Based on Labyrinthine Tour No.1]
explores the inversion of void space as solid space through a volumetric drawing of a labyrinthine walk, while creating a representation of the zigzagging walk as a linear one. By unfolding the multi-directional walk into a walk of one direction, I imagine how spaces might move around a person to challenge the conception of space as static. While the result is almost unintelligible, comprised of several points of perspective, it is still able to map clusters of movements and unfold the walk along a time-based axis to convey the sensation of moving forward.
